The New Mayor Promises a 'New Era' for New York City in Maiden Address

The 34-year-old figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.
“A moment like this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.
Ignoring suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead boldly and broadly.”
Steering by Socialist Ideals
Mamdani explicitly affirmed his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my convictions for fear of being called radical,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.
