EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
